i choose - a year of choice.

ready to make choices, ready to be happy, ready to move and shake. in many ways 2010 was a funk for us...i enjoyed being mama to my little bits beyond anything but some other things suffered.
the long winter goes on and one and i find there is a need to hope and look towards spring, to make choices, to choose seeds, shelter, chickens or no chickens, what kind of mother i want to be to my spirited toddler, what kind of food we want on our table, how much time to devote to each thing going round.
i'm not good at making choices so this will be a challenge, but i think i am up for it.

my guy!

my guy is wonderful. he is full of surprises, like making thai soup from scratch ( he just started cooking ) ...how ever did you come up with the recipes, love? well i just thought of how it should look...he replied.
genius!

he makes a mean batch of valentines brownies too!
and the best is he has made little bits his sous chef!

applesauce choco cupcakes for niña

yesterday em and i set about making some very special birthday cakes for her grandma, whom she calls niña (after the spanish word for little which she calls em)...ever since em's own second birthday she has been really into all things birthday being sure to point out "hots"...her word for candles, birthday cakes and party hats.
we decided to make a bunch of tiny cakies(cupcakes, really) for niña so that em could decorate them for herself. she had a blast...i'm not sure the end result is a beauteous as a four layer cake but certainly as much or more loved!
the other photo is of em in her princess dress from sarah's silks which she asks for first thing in the morning and cries to take off at night...

today and tomorrow

just a simple day today, making homemade lentil soup and waldorf kindergarten bread, along with a new no kneed bread that has to rise over night, all tucked in for it's work already!

birthday round-up...the cake!

i had a wonderful time making em's cake...it was martha's maypole cake recipe with seven minute frosting...and i must say i was nervous. esp. about those stiff peaks...frosting took longer than 7 minutes but i had reassurance from my sweet sister in law and an emergency call to dear e for confidence sake!
AND nik imported the rock candy all the way from our sweet belfast, didn't know it was so scarce, did you?!!!

if i had it to do again i would have put more frosting in between the layers, but i saved some aside to top the gumdrop cupcakes...yum!
